To many Burgundy is regarded as one of the most important wine producing regions in the world.

Burgundy has a higher number of appellations d'origine contrôlée (AOCs) than any other French region, and is often seen as the most terroir-conscious of the French wine regions. The various Burgundy AOCs are classified from carefully delineated Grand Cru vineyards down to more non-specific regional appellations. The practice of delineating vineyards by their terroir in Burgundy go back to Medieval times, when various monasteries played a key role in developing the Burgundy wine industry.

All these factors, plus the work in the vineyards throughout the year and the care and attention in the cellar, mean that each vineyard has its own characteristics and each wine within each vineyard can have its own individual taste and aromas.

Burgundy then offers endless scope for finding the perfect wine for any occasion – and for anyone, no matter how extensive their wine knowledge.

Discover the Origin is a campaign to educate and inspire people about the PDO, AOC or DOC status, which gives all products under this banner, a guaranteed seal of quality and provenance.

To lead you through this voyage of discovery is one of the most vivacious and engaging wine journalists in the UK, Susy Atkins.

Susy Atkins is a well-known, award-winning wine writer and broadcaster. She writes the weekly 'Sauce' column for the Sunday Telegraph, and is wine editor for Delicious magazine, as well as appearing regularly as wine expert on BBC1's Saturday Kitchen and Channel 4's Richard & Judy.
